RESUMO

There is an urgent need for global food systems transformation to realize a future where planetary health reaches its full potential. Paramount to this vision is the ability of stakeholders across sectors to understand how foods and dietary patterns impact food systems inclusive of all domains of sustainability-environmental, nutrition/health, economic and social. This article is a synopsis of presentations by 3 food systems experts to share the latest science in a session entitled "How do you measure sustainability? Opportunities for consistent and holistic metrics to support food systems transformation" at the American Society for Nutrition's 2023 annual conference. As summarized here, global population data showing widespread malnutrition underscore the important role of dietary diversity through a balance of plant- and animal-source foods to achieve nutritionally adequate diets and reduce risk of noncommunicable diseases. Yet, recent international audits of countries, companies, and organizations and their sustainability targets largely demonstrate an underrepresentation of robust nutrition/health metrics to support public nutrition and health progress. Addressing limitations in diet-sustainability modeling systems provides a viable opportunity to accurately reflect the important contributions and trade-offs of diets across all domains of sustainability to ultimately support evidence-based decision making in advancing healthy food systems.

Flood, drought, and frost may be disruptive events for agriculture. The subsidised crop insurance schemes are coping strategies that increase farms resilience to weather shocks and in fact the occurrence of extreme weather events and the level of subsidised crop insurance are correlated. Stronger evidence is found in Southern geographical areas, where drought (a major risking risk) is more frequent, and for spring-summer crops, that are less resilient to weather shocks. The article points at the need to reform extant policies to move toward a holistic approach for risk management.

This study investigates the impact of sweet potato plant sanitation on the yield and external and internal quality root storage exploring the nutritional content affected by various cooking methods (raw, boiled, and oven-cooked). The presence of viruses, and concretely of the sweet potato leaf curl virus (SPLCV), in sweet potato propagation material is shown to significantly reduce yield and modify storage root quality. Notably, the research reveals a substantial improvement in crop yield and external quality, reinforcing the efficacy of plant sanitation methods, specifically apical meristem culture, in preserving the overall productivity of sweet potato crops. Furthermore, the investigation identifies a noteworthy decrease in starch content, suggesting a dynamic interaction between plant sanitation and starch metabolism in response to viral diseases. The study also delves into the alteration of mineral absorption patterns, shedding light on how plant sanitation influences the uptake of essential minerals in sweet potato storage roots. While the health status of the plants only slightly affected magnesium (Mg) and manganese (Mn) accumulation, indicating a potential resilience of mineral balance under virus-infected conditions. Moreover, the research identifies significant modifications in antioxidant levels, emphasizing the role of plant sanitation in enhancing the nutritional quality of sweet potatoes. Heat-treated storage roots, subjected to various cooking methods such as boiling and oven-cooking, exhibit notable differences in internal quality parameters. These differences include increased concentrations of total soluble solids (SS) and heightened levels of antioxidant compounds, particularly phenolic and flavonoid compounds. The observed increase in antioxidant capacity underscores the potential health-promoting benefits associated with plant sanitation practices. Overall, the study underscores the critical importance of plant sanitation in enhancing sweet potato production sustainability, contributing to food security, and supporting local agricultural economies. The results emphasize the need for further research to optimize plant sanitation methods and promote their widespread adoption globally, providing valuable insights into the complex relationships in food quality.

Precise agriculture based on intelligent agriculture plays a significant role in sustainable development. The agricultural Internet of Things (IoTs) is a crucial foundation for intelligent agriculture. However, the development of agricultural IoTs has led to exponential growth in various sensors, posing a major challenge in achieving long-term stable power supply for these distributed sensors. Introducing a self-powered active biochemical sensor can help, but current sensors have poor sensitivity and specificity making this application challenging. To overcome this limitation, a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG)-based self-powered active urea sensor which demonstrates high sensitivity and specificity is developed. This device achieves signal enhancement by introducing a volume effect to enhance the utilization of charges through a novel dual-electrode structure, and improves the specificity of urea detection by utilizing an enzyme-catalyzed reaction. The device is successfully used to monitor the variation of urea concentration during crop growth with concentrations as low as 4 µm, without being significantly affected by common fertilizers such as potassium chloride or ammonium dihydrogen phosphate. This is the first self-powered active biochemical sensor capable of highly specific and highly sensitive fertilizer detection, pointing toward a new direction for developing self-powered active biochemical sensor systems within sustainable development-oriented agricultural IoTs.

African swine fever (ASF) is a highly fatal viral disease that poses a significant threat to domestic pigs and wild boars globally. In our study, we aimed to explore the potential of a multiplexed CRISPR-Cas system in suppressing ASFV replication and infection. By engineering CRISPR-Cas systems to target nine specific loci within the ASFV genome, we observed a substantial reduction in viral replication in vitro. This reduction was achieved through the concerted action of both Type II and Type III RNA polymerase-guided gRNA expression. To further evaluate its anti-viral function in vivo, we developed a pig strain expressing the multiplexable CRISPR-Cas-gRNA via germline genome editing. These transgenic pigs exhibited normal health with continuous expression of the CRISPR-Cas-gRNA system, and a subset displayed latent viral replication and delayed infection. However, the CRISPR-Cas9-engineered pigs did not exhibit a survival advantage upon exposure to ASFV. To our knowledge, this study represents the first instance of a living organism engineered via germline editing to assess resistance to ASFV infection using a CRISPR-Cas system. Our findings contribute valuable insights to guide the future design of enhanced viral immunity strategies. IMPORTANCE: ASFV is currently a devastating disease with no effective vaccine or treatment available. Our study introduces a multiplexed CRISPR-Cas system targeting nine specific loci in the ASFV genome. This innovative approach successfully inhibits ASFV replication in vitro, and we have successfully engineered pig strains to express this anti-ASFV CRISPR-Cas system constitutively. Despite not observing survival advantages in these transgenic pigs upon ASFV challenges, we did note a delay in infection in some cases. To the best of our knowledge, this study constitutes the first example of a germline-edited animal with an anti-virus CRISPR-Cas system. These findings contribute to the advancement of future anti-viral strategies and the optimization of viral immunity technologies.

Food system challenges exacerbate inequalities in access to fresh healthy food and threaten food security. Lack of food security, referred to as food insecurity, is associated with poorer physical and mental health outcomes and has been identified as a key challenge to address by calls for food system transformation. Increasing food production through urban agriculture, the production of fruit and vegetables in urban areas, has been identified as a potentially effective contributor to food system transformation, but the effect of this on household or UK-level food security is unclear. This paper reviews international evidence of urban agriculture's impact on food security. While findings are mixed, available evidence suggests that urban agriculture makes a modest, yet positive, contribution to food security by facilitating the availability of and access to fresh fruit and vegetables to food insecure households. In the UK, studies have shown this to be particularly beneficial during times of food system disruption. Capitalising on such benefits to improve food security requires government investment and support at both the national and local level, therefore increasing access to land for food growing, reducing costs of related resources, and collaboration with existing community groups to enhance sharing of skills and expertise, are identified as avenues for exploration that may help to achieve this. This review also highlights opportunities for future research in this field that may strengthen the quality of the evidence supporting urban agriculture's impact on food security.

The interaction between tannins and proteins has been studied intensively for more than half a century as a result of its significance for various applications. In chemical ecology, tannins are involved in response to environmental stress, including biotic (pathogens and herbivores) and abiotic (e.g., drought) stress, and in carbon (C) and nutrient cycling. This perspective summarizes the newest insights into the role of tannins in soil processes, including the interaction with fungi leading to C stabilization. Recent knowledge presented here may help to optimize land management to increase or preserve soil C to mitigate climate change.

In an effort to make pesticide use safer, more efficient, and sustainable, micro-/nanocarriers are increasingly being utilized in agriculture to deliver pesticide-active agents, thereby reducing quantities and improving effectiveness. In the use of nanopesticides, the choice to further design and prepare pesticide stimulus-responsive nanocarriers based on changes in the plant growth environment (light, temperature, pH, enzymes, etc.) has received more and more attention from researchers. Based on this, this paper examines recent advancements in nanomaterials for the design of stimulus-responsive micro-/nanocarriers. It delves into the intricacies of preparation methods, material enhancements, in vivo/ex vivo controlled release, and application techniques for controlled release formulations. The aim is to provide a crucial reference for harnessing nanotechnology to pursue reduced pesticide use and increased efficiency.

The global annual vegetable and fruit waste accounts for more than one-fifth of food waste, mainly due to deterioration. In addition, agricultural product spoilage can produce foodborne illnesses and threaten public health. Eco-friendly preservation technologies for extending the shelf life of agricultural products are of great significance to socio-economic development. Here, we report a dual-functional TENG (DF-TENG) that can simultaneously prolong the storage period of vegetables and realize wireless storage condition monitoring by harvesting the rotational energy. Under the illumination of the self-powered high-voltage electric field, the deterioration of vegetables can be effectively slowed down. It can not only decrease the respiration rate and weight loss of pakchoi but also increase the chlorophyll levels (∼33.1%) and superoxide dismutase activity (∼11.1%) after preservation for 4 days. Meanwhile, by harvesting the rotational energy, the DF-TENG can be used to drive wireless sensors for monitoring the storage conditions and location information of vegetables during transportation in real time. This work provides a new direction for self-powered systems in cost-effective and eco-friendly agricultural product preservation, which may have far-reaching significance to the construction of a sustainable society for reducing food waste.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to implement and evaluate integrated, school-based nutrition intervention packages for adolescents in Dodoma, Tanzania. METHODS: A cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted among six secondary schools in Dodoma, Tanzania. Two schools received the full-intervention package of school meals, nutrition education, school gardens, and community workshops. Two schools received the partial-intervention package without the school meals component. Two schools served as the controls and did not receive any intervention. The intervention was implemented over one academic year. The analytical sample included 534 adolescents aged 14 to 17 at baseline and 286 parents. Outcomes included nutrition knowledge, food preferences, diet quality, food insecurity, physical activity, growth, and anemia. Linear models were used to estimate mean differences, and logistic regression models were used to estimate odds ratios (ORs). RESULTS: Compared to the control, both the partial (OR: 0.59; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.35, 1.00) and full (OR: 0.49; 95% CI: 0.40, 0.59) interventions were associated with lower odds of poor diet quality among adolescents. Among the parents, both the partial (OR: 0.28; 95% CI: 0.20, 0.40) and full (OR: 0.28; 95% CI: 0.13, 0.58) interventions were associated with lower odds of poor diet quality. The partial (OR: 0.29; 95% CI: 0.18, 0.47) and full (OR: 0.47; 95% CI: 0.30, 0.72) interventions were associated with lower odds of adolescent overweight or obesity. DISCUSSION: School-based nutritional intervention packages incorporating multiple actions may improve the diet quality of adolescents and their household members and reduce the double burden of adolescent malnutrition.

Far-red (FR) light influences plant development significantly through shade avoidance response and photosynthetic modulation, but there is limited knowledge on how FR treatments influence the growth and nutrition of vegetables at different maturity stages in controlled environment agriculture (CEA). Here, we comprehensively investigated the impacts of FR on the yield, morphology, and phytonutrients of ruby streaks mustard (RS) at microgreen, baby leaf, and flowering stages. Treatments including white control, white with supplementary FR, white followed by singularly applied FR, and enhanced white (WE) matching the extended daily light integral (eDLI) of FR were designed for separating the effects of light intensity and quality. Results showed that singular and supplemental FR affected plant development and nutrition similarly throughout the growth cycle, with light intensity and quality playing varying roles at different stages. Specifically, FR did not affect the fresh and dry weight of microgreens but increased those values for baby leaves, although not as effectively as WE. Meanwhile, FR caused significant morphological change and accelerated the development of leaves, flowers, and seedpods more dramatically than WE. With regard to phytonutrients, light treatments affected the metabolomic profiles for baby leaves more dramatically than microgreens and flowers. FR decreased the glucosinolate and anthocyanin contents in microgreens and baby leaves, while WE increased the contents of those compounds in baby leaves. This study illustrates the complex impacts of FR on RS and provides valuable information for selecting optimal lighting conditions in CEA.

Plant are sessile organisms that are often subjected to a multitude of environmental stresses, with the occurrence of these events being further intensified by global climate change. Crop species therefore require specific adaptations to tolerate climatic variability for sustainable food production. Plant stress results in excess accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) leading to oxidative stress, and loss of cellular redox balance in the plant cells. Moreover, enhancement of cellular oxidation as well as oxidative signals have recently been recognized as crucial players in plant growth regulation under stress conditions. Multiple roles of redox regulation in crop production have been well documented, and major emphasis has focused on key redox-regulated proteins and non-protein molecules, such as NAD(P)H, thioredoxins, glutathione, glutaredoxins, peroxiredoxins, ascorbate, and reduced ferredoxin. These have been widely implicated in the regulation of (epi)genetic factors modulating growth and vigor of crop plants, particularly within an agricultural context. In this regard, priming with the employment of chemical and biological agents has emerged as a fascinating approach to improve plant tolerance against various abiotic and biotic stressors. Priming in plants is a physiological process, where prior exposure to specific stressors induces a state of heightened alertness, enabling a more rapid and effective defense response upon subsequent encounters with similar challenges. Priming is reported to play an important role in the regulation of cellular redox homeostasis, maximizing crop productivity under stress conditions and thus achieving yield security. By taking this into consideration, the present review is an up-to-date critical evaluation of promising plant priming technologies and their role in the regulation of redox components towards enhanced plant adaptations to extreme unfavorable environmental conditions. The challenges and opportunities of plant priming are addressed, with the aim to encourage future research in this field towards effective application in crop stress management including horticultural species.

Climate change threatens the lives and livelihoods of smallholder farmers throughout the global South. In order to address the challenges these farmers face, researchers and practitioners need reasonable theoretical models of how humans and the environment interact within social-ecological systems (SES). Social-ecological resilience theory has proved to be a popular model for understanding human environment relationships within SES; however, the theory lacks a sophisticated understanding of power, relying instead on outdated functionalist sociological approaches. We reconstruct social-ecological resilience theory through a case study of smallholder climate change adaptation in Southern Province, Zambia. Farmers in the region focus on cattle and maize production. Though the changing environment would seem to favor different crops and livestock, institutional (power) dynamics determine whether or not individuals have the capacity (or desire) to adapt. Our critical reconstruction provides researchers and practitioners with an improved social-ecological lens for understanding the causes and consequences of vulnerability and adaptation.

Maize Lethal Necrosis (MLN) and Maize Streak Virus (MSV) are among maize diseases which affect productivity in Tanzania and Africa at large. These diseases can be detected early for timely interventions and minimal losses. Machine learning (ML) has emerged as a powerful tool for automated diseases detection, offering several advantages over traditional methods. This article presents the updated dataset of 9356 imagery maize leaves to assist researchers in developing technological solutions for addressing crop diseases. The high-resolution imagery data presented in this dataset were captured using smartphone cameras in farm fields which were not selected in the previously published dataset. Also, data collection was taken in the range of three months from November 2022 to January 2023 to incorporate farming season not covered in the previously published dataset. The presented dataset can be used by researchers in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to develop ML solutions and eliminate the need of manual inspection and reduce human bias. Developing ML solutions require large amount of data therefore, the updated and previously published datasets can be combined to accommodate diverse and wider applicability.

Workplace sexual harassment (WSH) is a systemic problem in agricultural employment. In the United States, where most research on the topic has been conducted, studies have suggested the rate of WSH against women farmworkers may be as high as 95%. Women who are immigrants, younger, have precarious immigration status, and come from indigenous communities are particularly vulnerable to WSH. The purpose of this study was to identify and describe the factors that contribute to such high rates of WSH in waged employment in the agricultural sector. To achieve this, we completed a systematic review of the empirical literature on sexual harassment in agricultural workplaces. Our review includes 29 empirical studies on WSH in agriculture, including 13 studies conducted in countries within the Global North and 16 from the Global South. The paper presents a typology of WSH in agriculture, categorizing its emotional and physical forms and describing what the literature reveals about its impacts on those who experience it. We then present our analysis of the structural and cultural factors contributing to high WSH rates in waged agricultural employment. We found that migration policies, the organizational and physical characteristics of agricultural work, the informality of employment relationships, traditional masculinity norms, and weak enforcement of workplace regulations were the principal factors facilitating high rates of WSH in agriculture. However, the study has limitations: it primarily focuses on literature in English and Spanish, risking geographical bias towards the Americas and potentially overlooking significant research in other languages or published in less accessible databases, including grey literature and regional reports. These limitations highlight the need for broader research to fill these empirical gaps, particularly from the Global South.

Participation in urban agriculture conducted through community gardens and allotments is known for its benefits to physical and mental health. Due to the recognition of these benefits, which include reduction of stress, depression and anxiety, such participation is increasingly being prescribed as a non-medical health intervention. Community gardens have the added advantage of immersion into a community, without the often-long waiting lists and level of commitment involved in allotment tenancies. What has not been explored is the demanding nature of the commitment required by volunteer coordinators, and ironically, the negative effects it can have on their wellbeing. In a study of food activism in Aberdeen, UK, we conducted 21 semi-structured interviews with participants from a range of bodies involved in the city's food growing projects. From the spectrum of food growers, we found that volunteer coordinators of community gardens experienced the greatest burdens on their time and wellbeing, with their demanding multi-functional roles leading to fatigue and feelings of over-commitment. Other problems encountered by community gardeners were over-reliance on grant funding and the disproportionate impacts of COVID closures on vulnerable groups. Policy interventions are required to reduce dependency on competitive grant funding and to support both coordinators and the long-term sustainability of community gardens.

Drought and salinity stresses present significant challenges that exert a severe impact on crop productivity worldwide. Understanding the dynamics of salicylic acid (SA), a vital phytohormone involved in stress response, can provide valuable insights into the mechanisms of plant adaptation to cope with these challenging conditions. This paper describes and tests a sensor system that enables real-time and non-invasive monitoring of SA content in avocado plants exposed to drought and salinity. By using a reverse iontophoretic system in conjunction with a laser-induced graphene electrode, we demonstrated a sensor with high sensitivity (82.3 nA/[µmol L-1⋅cm-2]), low limit of detection (LOD, 8.2 µmol L-1), and fast sampling response (20 s). Significant differences were observed between the dynamics of SA accumulation in response to drought versus those of salt stress. SA response under drought stress conditions proved to be faster and more intense than under salt stress conditions. These different patterns shed light on the specific adaptive strategies that avocado plants employ to cope with different types of environmental stressors. A notable advantage of the proposed technology is the minimal interference with other plant metabolites, which allows for precise SA detection independent of any interfering factors. In addition, the system features a short extraction time that enables an efficient and rapid analysis of SA content.

Nitrogen fertiliser in agriculture continues to be one of the largest contributors to water pollution driven by the global food demand. Consequently, policies designed to tackle nitrogen pollution tend to be focused on the farm level. Applying mitigation measures requires knowledge, local labour and financial investment to achieve desired goals. Influencing farming activity comes with challenges as policies result in economic losses. We propose Water Quality Trading (WQT) to minimize the cost of controlling water pollution and develop it for policy recommendations in the River Alde catchment in Suffolk. We apply WQT to three scenarios named Reference Pollution Target, Livestock Target Plan and Variation of Farming. Our findings demonstrate that WQT can reduce farmers nitrogen load by 8%, 7% and 18% respectively from the baseline of 6 mg/L. The scenario simulations show a net revenue increase of 6%, 5% and 18% respectively. Our study demonstrates the effectiveness of the WQT approach in reducing water pollution, promoting sustainable agriculture and meeting water management goals.
